POQUOSON — Kiwanis Club of Poquoson members supported the ongoing beauty of Poquoson by cleaning up Wythe Creek Road's parade route. This spot was adopted by the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson and members regularly support trash removal and fresh painting efforts.

Kiwanis Club of Poquoson Supports Preschool Outreach

POQUOSON — The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson hosted Caitlin Osborne at its regular morning meeting to hear about the Integrated Poquoson Outreach Preschool (IPOP) Program. Ms. Osborn explained how the program works to support preschool children, the growth of the program, its successes, the need for additional resources, and the challenges facing Poquoson’s only public preschool program. She shared photos of the many children the IPOP Program serves.

To show its support for the Poquoson Primary School and this program in particular, the club donated $1,000 to fund a scholarship for one child in need of the program who would otherwise be unable to participate.

2018-2019 School Year

The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson welcomed the K-Kids Club from PES to breakfast to share some of the activities and projects they have completed during the current school year, including cleaning and exploring the Poquoson Museum, collecting money for UNICEF, and spreading thankful messages for our military throughout Poquoson’s local businesses.

May 17th, 2019 - Our club presented a check for $1,400 to Troy Wojewoda and his son Cole to help support the four Poquoson teams (total of 27 kids) that are representing our schools at the prestigious Odyssey of the Mind World Competition!

Poquoson Kiwanis Pig Roast

The Poquoson Kiwanis Club will be conducting its annual Pig Roast on Saturday, May 5 from 11:00 to 5:30 in front of the Wells Fargo Bank on Wythe Creek Road in Poquoson.

Three times a year, selling barbecue to the public is an “all-hands” effort for the membership. Besides the original Spring event, the club has a sandwich booth at the Poquoson Seafood Festival in the Fall and will sell one-pound containers of bulk barbecue at the Poquoson Parks & Recreation Center this coming June 9. Advance orders for bulk barbecue, including quantity and phone number, can be emailed to barbecue@poquosonkiwanis.org.

This Saturday’s menu will feature a BBQ dinner for $9.00 (BBQ, cole slaw, hush puppies, and baked beans) and a BBQ sandwich with cole slaw for $6.00. Drinks are included. Dollar-off advance purchase tickets are available from any Poquoson Kiwanian.

Poquoson Kiwanis Club supports youth reading program

The Poquoson Kiwanis Club served hot dogs and helped entertain kids at the Poquoson Public Library’s summer reading program picnic.

Fourteen members spent the morning on Wednesday cooking hot dogs and serving lunches.

Kiwanis club volunteers donate many hours to local activities including displaying U.S. Flags in the city center at holidays, Adopt-A-spot, driving seniors to medical appointments, staffing USO at the airport, special assistance projects for seniors and needy families, and sponsoring Kiwanis youth leadership programs at Poquoson and Tabb elementary, middle, and high schools.

Kiwanis and Poquoson Library continue dynamic partnership

It's been 11 years since the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson created the Babygarten reading program through the Poquoson Library with the goal of preparing young children for a lifetime of reading.

On Feb. 10, the club continued its ongoing support of Babygarten by donating $700 to the six-week program for infants between 2 and 24 months and their caregivers.

Since the club's formation in 1974, it has been dedicated to enhancing literacy in Poquoson and forged a partnership with the library as part of its Kiwanis International program, Young Children Priority One.

"Whoever the chairmen was for our Young Children Priority One just came up with the idea, sat down with the library and said, 'Hey, how can we do this with you?' It was just a perfect match," said Phil Tawney, Kiwanis Club of Poquoson president.

Through the Kiwanis-wide initiative, the local chapter began donating books and money to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a Poquoson Library program that encourages parents and children to read 1,000 books together before the child enters kindergarten.

The Poquoson Kiwanis donations to the Babygarten program help provide age-appropriate board books.

"It gives the parents time to interact with each other and share parenting things that are going on," said Poquoson Library children's librarian Martha "Marty" Staton. "It gives the children time as well and there's a lot of rhythm and rhyme things they do at the beginning, a lot of active and interactive rhythm, then they read a board book together."

Each participant in 1,000 Book Before Kindergarten receives a notebook, tote bag and their name on a mural inside the Poquoson Library after the first 100 books read.

In October, the club began to donate a children's book to the library in the name of every speaker who attends its weekly Tuesday morning meetings.

"The cost was almost exactly the same for that many coffee mugs versus a children's book. How we do it is we give the money to library, they order the books that they need, and every month they give me a stack of four or five books, depending on how many speakers, we have and they come in and speak, we take a picture and I put their name inside the book," Tawney said.

Poquoson Kiwanis Recognize Teachers of the Year

Charlie French, Poquoson Kiwanis member recognized teachers of the year representing the four Poquoson City Schools at the April School Board meeting. They were presented with a certificate and a check for their use.

Kiwanis Club President Dr. Larry Svihla presented a $500 check to Poquoson Museum past president Mrs. Tommie Turner at a recent club meeting. The generous gift will be used by the museum to promote the historical and cultural past of Poquoson.

The Poquoson Museum members wish to thank the Kiwanis Club for its generous gift and continued strong support for the museum.

Poquoson Kiwanis Club Tree Lighting

December 11, 2013 - With a flip of a switch, Poquoson Mayor Gene Hunt will turn on the lights on the city’s tree donated by the Kiwanis Club Of Poquoson and dedicated to the memory of the late General George W. Dickerson.

The annual community Christmas Tree Lighting will be held in front of the Poquoson City Hall Friday Dec. 13 at 4:30 p.m. beginning with a welcome by local club president Graham Wilson.

The middle school will provide a musical program and Santa and elves will arrive by fire truck.

Santa's elves, members of Poquoson Middle School Builders’ Club, will distribute free candy.

General Dickerson was the first president of the Kiwanis Club Of Poquoson and served as city manager of Poquoson for a number of years.

October 31st, 2011 - Kiwanis Club of Poquoson donated the flag pole at the Poquoson's football field located the Poquoson Middle School.

March 11th, 2011 - Several of our Kiwanis members volunteered today to read Dr. Suess to the Poquoson Primary School students for National Read Across America Day, which is also Dr. Suess' birthday!
