Welcome:  Jim rang the bell and called the meeting to order.

Introduction of Guests:  Allison (Ally) Gorney was here for the 2nd time.

Birthdays:  John Ambrose (1/25), Dave Baker (1/22), Walt Burns (1/26), Tim Howard (1/29), Marilyn Kuhn (1/24), Dick LaBarre (1/30), Teresa Lowery (1/28), Jennifer Parish (1/24) - - enjoy your birthday week.

Anniversaries:  None.

Happy Dollars:  Traci Crawford, Chip Petre, Jim Christol.  Today’s Happy Dollar collections were earmarked for the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation in honor of Brian Wilson and Carl Ferreira.  Thanks to all for supporting this effort over the last three meetings.

50/50: Four cards and $2015.  Pat Garvey drew the 8 of Diamonds.  I can assure you that we will have a winner in February.  There are only 3 cards left!

Announcements:

I want to thank this club for the tremendous work you have done over the last two weeks to honor the lives of Brian Wilson and Carl Ferreira.  So many of you worked tirelessly to support their families and pay great respect and tribute to these outstanding men. 

Jim read a thank you letter sent to the club from Ann Wilson.  She is very appreciative for the many things we have been doing to support her family.  She promised to attend a future meeting to thank us in person.

For next years slate of officers we are seeking volunteers for Vice President and Treasurer at this time.  Please contact any of our club officers for details.  Marilyn Kuhn has done an excellent job as our Treasurer for the last two years and will work side by side to groom our next Treasurer.  We are also looking for a volunteer to be our club’s point of contact for the Kiwanis International Eliminate Program.  Phil Prisco and Jim Christol have details.

Tonight from 6:00PM to 8:00PM there will be a meeting at City Hall where Mayor Hunt will outline his vision of upcoming community needs. I will attend along with Steve Yakshe, Graham Wilson and Cornell Owens.

The Kiwanis Club of Tabb will have their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday 4 Feb 2012 at Tabb Elementary School.  Pancakes will be served from 8:30AM to 11:00AM.  Tickets are $5 per person and there will be $1 raffle tickets for special prizes.    If you signed up on our roster for tickets you will be billed on your next statement and you should have your tickets. Bring the whole family!

Polar Plunge date is also 4 Feb 2012 at 2:30PM.  All plungers meet at Larry Svihla’s parking lot at 12:15PM this coming Saturday and we will car pool.  Brian Wilson’s son Douglas will lead us into the frigid Atlantic Ocean just as Brian did for so many years.

Our Poquoson Middle School Builders Club will have an induction ceremony for new members at the Middle School Auditorium Wednesday 8 Feb at 3:00PM.  Come out and meet these fine students and their families - - there will be a reception with cake after the ceremony.

MEDTRAN has an urgent need for drivers.  Please volunteer some time to transport our aging citizens to their medical appointments.  Cindy Yakshe has details - - they are especially in need of van drivers.

Tim Howard presented information on the USO Gala Fundraiser that will take place at the Hampton Convention Center on Saturday 11 Feb from 5:00PM to 10:00PM. Details are on our club calendar on our website.

We are having a Getting to Know You social at the Vineyards in Kiln Creek on Saturday 18 Feb. A signup roster went around last week but we could not locate it today. If you would like to attend please contact our Social Chairman George Hawes.

The Kiwanis Midwinter Hampton Roads Regional Conference will be on Saturday 25 Feb 2012 from 7:30AM to 3:30PM. Breakfast and Lunch will be served and everything is covered with your registration fee of $25 - - and this is all paid by our club - - so you attend for free!  The location this year is Hunter B. Andrews School in Hampton.  The address is 3120 Victoria Blvd, Hampton VA 23661. Use the signup roster to register - - DO NOT REGISTER ON LINE.  It will be easier for us to send in one check with all the attendees from the signup sheet.  The sign up roster is making the rounds.  Also Hank Brodsky is selling Ducky Derby raffle tickets with the winners announced at Midwinter.

The Kiwanis International Convention will be in New Orleans 28 June – 1 July 2012.  Let Jim Christol know if you are interested in attending.

Club Satellite meets this Thursday 2 Feb 2012, 7:00PM at Anna’s Pizza.  The speaker will be Ally Gorney to discuss the YMCA First Tee Program.

There will be a Board Meeting next Monday at 7:00PM at the Poquoson Library meeting room.

Mark your calendars for Kiwanis 1 Day on 21 April (Saturday).  We are exploring a canal cleanup project with the city.

There will be an Adopt A Spot Sat 11 Feb.  Bob Jacobson will send around a signup roster at the next meeting.

The Key Club will be at Barnes & Noble Sat 11 Feb from 11:00AM to 5:00PM.  If you make purchases during that time frame at Barnes & Noble (Newport News near Patrick Henry Mall) and mention the Key Club a portion of the sale will go to the Key Club Fundraiser.  Pat Garvey has already sent out an E-Mail to all club members announcing the details.

Don Ward gave a presentation on the upcoming Poquoson Education Foundation Silent Auction and Fundraiser to be held at the Poquoson Yacht Club on 3 March 2012.  Handouts were passed around.

Getting to Know You:  Alex Ayers was our featured member. He is an accomplished golfer and Virginia Tech graduate with a degree in Business.  He lives in Poquoson and works for Merrill Lynch. He was also our Kiwanian of the month earlier this year.

Bring someone to Breakfast and show off our great club! I would also encourage Tuesday folks to come to an evening session and evening folks to come to one of our Tuesday breakfast meetings.
